Best Yorkie shampoo and conditioner

Because of their unique, hair-like quality, Yorkie coats require lots of care. Choosing a high-quality, organic dog shampoo for Yorkies makes this grooming process much easier. But with so many products on the market today, it is difficult to make an informed decision about which shampoos are safe and ethical.

Make no mistake, just because a company claims to make “all-natural” shampoo does not mean it is being sincere. Many companies use misleading marketing terms and inferior ingredients that could ultimately damage your dog’s skin.

To help you make the most informed choice, we have carefully researched the best dog shampoo brands available. Our team (Max and I!) has personally tested all of the shampoos included below, and we’ve verified their companies of origin.

We eliminated dozens of potential shampoos due to poor ingredients or because the manufacturing company did not meet our high standards of ethical and sustainable business practices. The result is a list of six high-quality organic shampoos that will work perfectly with your dog’s coat and skin.

Here are the brands that passed our test. Click the links below to jump down to our full review of the product that looks good to you.

Best shampoo for Yorkies with dry skin:

4-Legger All Natural Lavender Dog Shampoo

4-Legger-All-Natural-Calm-Lavender-Dog-Shampoo
What’s inside:
  • Organic aloe juice
  • Organic saponified oils (coconut, shea butter, olive, sunflower & jojoba)
  • Organic vegetable glycerin
  • Organic lavender essential oil
  • Organic calendula
  • Organic St. John’s wort
  • Organic rosemary extract

Yorkshire Terriers are pretty susceptible to skin irritation. And when dry, itchy skin occurs, your poor little guy will be miserable. If you notice lots of uncomfortable scratching, it may be time to switch to the best shampoo for sensitive Yorkie skin: 4-legger All Natural Calm Lavender shampoo.

This shampoo will help moisturize dry, flaky skin using an amazing blend of aloe, shea butter, and coconut oil. In addition, this shampoo contains soothing lavender, St. John’s Wort, organic calendula, jojoba, and sunflower oil to reduce inflammation of the skin and relieve hot spots.

It also uses rosemary essential oil as a natural preservative, so no formaldehyde or other chemical preservatives will touch your dog’s skin.

Sniff test:

As expected, the strongest note on this shampoo is the warm lavender. It is strong enough to be therapeutic and calming, but not overpowering. If you love lavender, you and your pup will enjoy this brand.

Why we love it:
  • Clean, safe skin treatment using some of nature’s most powerful essential oils and ingredients
  • Extremely clean ingredients—no dangerous chemicals, so its safe for you and your pup
  • USDA certified organic ingredients
  • Sustainably sourced
  • Vegan
  • Cruelty-free—no animal testing

  • Organic sweet almond oil
  • Organic avocado oil
  • Organic coconut milk
  • Water
  • Organic castor oil
  • Sodium Hydroxide*
  • Organic sustainable palm oil

If you prefer a shampoo bar over liquid, you can’t do better than Chagrin Valley. This family-owned company has been producing small-batch organic products for nearly 20 years and holds itself to an incredibly high standard of quality.

Chagrin Valley shampoo bars lather up well with adequate water, but they do it without the chemical surfactants that a lot of other dog shampoos use. The incredibly clean, simple ingredients used by Chagrin Valley means you can wash without any worry, and both your dog and your hands will come out moisturized, clean, and smelling naturally wonderful.

Sniff test:

The almond, avocado, coconut, and rosemary combine to create a lovely, almost peppery scent that is both mild and fresh. I loved it, and so did Max.

*Note: Sodium hydroxide, better known as lye, is used in the saponification process to turn oil into soap. This is the standard, safe method used in soapmaking, and absolutely no lye remains in the finished product.

Why we love it:
  • Vegan, simple, all-natural ingredients
  • Environmentally friendly with minimal packaging
  • Sustainably sourced ingredients
  • Cruelty-free
  • Made in the USA

Best flea shampoo for Yorkies:

Wondercide Natural Flea & Tick Shampoo Bar for Dogs

Wondercide Geranium Dog Shampoo Bar with Citronella
What’s inside:
  • Saponified oils (coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, castor oil)
  • Geranium oil
  • Citronella oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
  • Honey

The thing about tick and flea shampoo is that it’s usually anything but chemical-free. Flea and tick shampoos are notorious for packing in loads of harsh chemicals that you really don’t want on your or your Yorkie’s skin.

That’s why we were so pleased to discover Wondercide’s natural shampoo bar full of environmentally friendly and dog-safe ingredients that you will love and pesky bugs will hate.

The secret to the Wondercide Natural Flea & Tick shampoo bar is in the recipe: organic coconut, olive, and castor oils to nourish the skin, shea butter to protect the skin’s natural oils, aloe vera to soothe and hydrate, and geranium and natural citronella oils to pack a kung-fu punch against ticks and other creepy crawlers.

These safe but effective ingredients make this our favorite weapon against unwanted fur hitch-hikers. And the best part of all: it’s safe and gentle on my skin, too, so I have no worries about what my hands are absorbing during bathtime.

Sniff test:

The geranium and citronella oils produce a pronounced, somewhat floral scent that plays a crucial role in repelling pests, but it isn’t strong enough to repel you. We found it unique, pleasant, and subtle enough to not offend your pup, either.

Why we love it:
  • Naturally antibacterial and antifungal
  • Made with human food-grade ingredients
  • Lathers up nicely but tends to last longer than many liquid shampoos
  • Natural citronella and geranium oils safely repel and kill pests with no chemicals
  • Made in Texas, USA
  • Supports a family-owned business

Best organic unscented dog shampoo:

4-Legger Certified Organic Hypoallergenic All Natural Aloe Dog Shampoo

4-Legger Certified Organic Hypoallergenic All Natural Aloe Dog Shampoo
What’s inside:
  • Saponified organic oils (coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil)
  • Organic aloe vera
  • Rosemary extract

4-Legger gets a second entry on our list, and for good reason. This company puts out some of the best, cleanest, and most health-conscious products in the biz, and we can’t get enough of them.

The short list of ingredients makes this one of the best shampoos for Yorkie puppies while they are still getting used to bath time and may thrash around a bit. While this is not a ‘tear-free’ shampoo and care should be taken to avoid the eyes, the limited ingredients help limit irritation if any shampoo does accidentally end up where it’s not supposed to be.

This all-natural aloe shampoo is also a super clean and simple solution for a dog with a sensitive nose. The shampoo has all the normal power of 4-Legger products, but it only leaves a minimal scent, so your pup won’t be bothered by the smell and you’ll love how clean she is.

Sniff test:

As the only unscented entry in our shampoo round-up, this one stays true to its purpose and has little scent at all. You can detect the faintest hint of coconut and olive oil, but the scent is truly subtle and this shampoo should be a great option for both pooches and people with sensitive noses.

Why we love it:
  • Incredibly simple ingredients for Yorkies and other dogs with lots of skin allergies
  • No dangerous chemicals, so it’s safe for you and your dog
  • USDA certified organic ingredients
  • Sustainably sourced
  • Vegan
  • Cruelty-free—no animal testing
  • Made in the USA
  • Environmentally friendly, biodegradable ingredients

Best Yorkie shampoo made with essential oils:

Vermont Soap Pet Magic Dog Shampoo

Vermont Soap Pet Magic Dog Shampoo
What’s inside:
  • Organic saponified oils (coconut, olive, jojoba oil)
  • Rosemary essential oil
  • Lemongrass essential oil
  • Rosemary extract
  • Organic aloe vera

Vermont Soap takes green, natural, and organic very seriously. Their products are USDA-certified as food-grade organics, and they partner closely with the North East Organic Farmers (NOFA) and Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) associations to sustainably source their ingredients.

Vermont Soap has also committed to giving 1% of its sales to environmental preservation and restoration causes and has even worked with a women’s cooperative in Asawinso, Ghana, West Africa to help develop life-changing, sustainable soap-making franchises in that region.

In addition to their USDA organic certification, Vermont Soap is also part of the Green Products Alliance and the Vermont Business Environmental Partnership. Simply put, they take on their mission of leaving the world a better place with an intensity that is awe-inspiring.

The same level of responsibility and passion has been poured into all of their products, and Pet Magic Dog Shampoo is no exception. Made with the simplest ingredients and sustainably sourced essential oils, this shampoo is an easy choice if you and your pup are looking to give back while getting sudsy.

Sniff test:

The lemongrass essential oil really shines through, giving this shampoo a fresh but natural scent that is appealing without being overwhelming.

Why we love it:
  • Incredible attention paid to sustainable, natural ingredient sourcing
  • Supports a local business with a great mission
  • High-quality, organic ingredients that clean and nourish the skin
  • Made with pure, olive-oil based castile soap
  • Made in the USA
  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • GMO-free

Best organic shampoo for really smelly dogs:

Earthbath All Natural Mediterranean Magic

Earthbath All Natural Mediterranean Magic Dog Shampoo
What’s inside:
  • Purified water
  • Renewable plant-derived and coconut-based cleansers
  • Organic aloe vera
  • Vitamins A, B, D, & E
  • Glycerin
  • Rosemary oil
  • Preservative

Sometimes even the most proper pups end up beyond messy. When your dog has rolled in something awful smelling, it’s time to bring out the heavy-duty shampoo. That’s where Earthbath comes to the rescue.

One of nature’s most wonderful gifts is rosemary. This hardy plant produces oils that are increasingly found to have antibacterial5 and cancer-fighting properties.6

It just so happens, rosemary oil is one of the main components in Earthbath’s shampoo for smelly dogs, and this natural ingredient does an incredible job of deeply but gently cleaning while also fighting the worst odors. Rosemary oil is also rich in antioxidants, helps build a glossy coat, and naturally repels fleas.

Sniff test:

Earthbath shampoo has more pronounced, ‘soapier’ scent, with heavy lavender overtones. If you prefer non-soapy scents, this may not be the shampoo for you. However, we did not find the scent to be overpowering.

Why we love it:
  • Natural, safe ingredients
  • Powerful but gentle with no harsh chemical cleaners
  • Biodegradable, earth-friendly ingredients
  • Cruelty-free
  • Made in the USA

Is Yorkie conditioner important?

The dog shampoos we have selected here are highly conditioning for your Yorkie’s coat, and you may find that no additional conditioner is needed. However, if you are looking to boost that shine, or if you find your Yorkshire Terrier is particularly susceptible to dry skin after a bath, consider following your shampoo with a safe, non-toxic coat conditioner.

Be careful though—many of the conditioners out there are full of abrasive chemicals and preservatives, and you will need to read those labels very carefully.

One dog conditioner we like is Bodhi Dog’s All Natural Moisturizing Pet Conditioner, which includes aloe vera and jojoba oil to keep your pup’s skin moisturized and fur soft.

3 things to consider before choosing a Yorkie shampoo

Caring for a Yorkshire Terrier’s coat and skin requires just a bit of extra effort, but fortunately for you, we’ve done most of the research already. A few of the most important considerations when buying shampoo for a Yorkie are:

1. Your Yorkie’s skin

Because Yorkshire Terriers have fewer hair follicles and no undercoat, they are particularly prone to developing dry or irritated skin. Using a shampoo that includes high-quality, natural moisturizers will help prevent issues like dry skin, irritation, and ‘hot spots.’

For dog’s with chronic skin irritation, a quality leave-in conditioner or hotspot spray may provide relief and reduce constant scratching.

Yorkies also tend to be sensitive to certain allergens. A regular bath will help keep your dog’s skin free of irritants that cause allergic reactions, but some low-quality shampoos may actually include these allergens in their formulas, so pay careful attention to the ingredients list if your dog has known allergies.

>> Read more: Yorkie Allergies: What Are Yorkies Allergic To?

2. The shampoo ingredients

When looking for safe dog shampoo, always start with the back of the bottle. The ingredients list will be the single most important factor in choosing a shampoo for your dog.

Beautiful marketing and brand recognition are fine, but none of those will protect your dog from dangerous ingredients, and it is your responsibility as a pet parent to protect your dog from harmful chemicals, in addition to any allergens we mentioned above.

Ingredients to avoid:

Fragrance

Fragrance is a catchall ingredient that can literally include anything a manufacturer holds back as a ‘trade secret.’ Companies may include chemicals, byproducts, and other dangerous ingredients that do not have to be listed by name and all of which can be grouped under the term fragrance

Look for companies that either do not include fragrance or that explicitly list the ingredients that are included within that term.

In addition, your dog’s nose is more sensitive than yours by orders of magnitude, and that sweet-smelling fragrance is likely overwhelming and irritating for a dog’s senses.

That’s why we included our sniff test in the product reviews above.

Use shampoos that are naturally scented and that have a subtle, gentle scent that won’t irritate your dog’s nose.

The DEAs

Cocamide and lauramide DEA are caustic ingredients that have commercial applications in oil refineries. These ingredients, even in small doses, are skin and eye irritants and are carcinogenic in high doses.

DEA-related ingredients are also listed as environmental hazards by European environmental protection agencies.

Unfortunately, despite all of those facts, cocamide and lauramide DEA still find their way into many dog shampoos.

Preservatives

Frequently, dog shampoo products include preserving chemicals to ensure freshness and inhibit bacterial growth. The problem is, many common preservatives are also potentially irritating chemicals, and some are even outright dangerous for a Yorkshire Terrier.

Among these are formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers. You will rarely find formaldehyde listed as a formal ingredient because manufacturers like to hide it in other chemicals that slowly release formaldehyde over time. These chemicals include:

  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Imidazolidinyl urea
  • Diazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol)
  • 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane
  • Beta-Bromo-Beta-Nitrotrimethyleneglycol
  • Bronidiol
  • Bronocot
  • Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate

At the very least, formaldehyde is a potential skin, eye and respiratory irritant that should be avoided.1 On the extreme end, formaldehyde can be dangerously toxic and has been linked to greater risks of cancer in both animals and humans.2

Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol (also known as isopropanol, 2-Propanol and Propan-2-ol) is essentially rubbing alcohol and can cause irritation or damage to the lungs, liver, and even the heart.

Mineral oil

While many claim mineral oil is highly toxic, studies have shown it to be relatively non-toxic to dogs and other animals.3 While its basic toxicity is low, it is still a derivative of petroleum and tends to coat the skin, disrupting your dog’s natural moisture levels.

Also, if inhaled in large enough quantities, mineral oil can lead to lung irritation and increase the likelihood of respiratory issues.

Phthalates and parabens

Phthalates and parabens are frequently included in dog shampoo scents and preservatives and should be avoided. In addition to possible links to cancer and liver issues, phthalates and parabens are also endocrine disruptors and may alter estrogen levels in your dog.

Sodium laureth sulfate

That satisfying lather that your dog’s shampoo creates might not be altogether safe. Sodium laureth sulfate is a common foaming agent that can be harsh on your dog’s skin as well as impact the skin’s natural pH levels. Additionally, sodium laureth sulfate can be contaminated during the manufacturing process with 1,4-dioxane which is a known, cancer-causing chemical for animals.4

Natural ingredients to look for

Look for natural ingredients like organic jojoba, coconut, hempseed, frankincense, lemongrass, and lavender oils for moisturizing and soothing a dog’s skin. Natural shampoos that use rosemary and grapefruit seed extract as natural, safe preservatives are also far safer and gentler on your pup’s skin.

In general, if you can’t identify the majority of ingredients on a label as natural and organic, you should keep looking for a better shampoo.

3. How it was tested

In addition to safe ingredients, look for a dog shampoo that has not been developed using harmful animal testing. Companies that do not engage in dangerous or cruel animal testing are more likely to care about the ingredients and impact of their product on your pooch. You want a shampoo made by people who would use their products on their own pets.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few common questions people have about using Yorkie shampoo.

How often should I bathe my dog?

Yorkshire Terriers should be bathed no more than once every two to three weeks unless they have gotten particularly dirty on a walk or a backyard adventure. Bathing dogs more frequently may deplete natural skin oils and cause irritation or dryness.

>> Read more: How to Bathe a Yorkie (And How Often)

Each dog’s skin is different, however, and you may find your pup is more or less prone to Yorkie dry skin conditions. If you find your pup is developing dry skin, reduce your bath frequency by one week and make sure to treat any irritated skin with a high-quality hot-spot spray.

Your lifestyle is also a factor in how often your Yorkshire Terrier gets a bath.

If you and your pup spend lots of time outdoors, or if you live in a rainy climate that creates lots of mud, you may find more frequent baths a necessity. If your Yorkie has a short haircut and spends most of their time indoors or in a clean dog park, baths may be reduced to once a month or as needed for odor.

>> Pro tip: If you keep your dog on a sparse bathing schedule, use dog eye wipes in-between baths to keep your pup looking sharp in the sensitive areas.

Can I use baby shampoo on my Yorkie?

Although baby shampoos are gentler than products meant for adults, you should not use any human shampoo on your dog. Even tear-free or high-end natural shampoos can be harmful to your canine’s skin.

Why? The natural pH level of a dog’s skin is different from a human’s, so many shampoos formulated for humans contain fragrances and other ingredients that will upset that pH level. This can lead to irritation, rashes, and other skin disorders.

How do I make my Yorkie’s hair shiny?

A good shampoo is only a part of the equation when giving your Yorkie a beautiful, shiny coat. Regular Yorkie grooming, a quality leave-in conditioner spray, and a healthy diet can all play a crucial role in giving your pup a shiny coat.
