4 best dog clippers for Yorkies

Finding the best dog clippers for your pup is so important. The right clippers will make the grooming process easier, help you create an attractive Yorkie haircut, and most importantly, they will reduce the chance of hurting your furry pal. These are our top picks.

The one that keeps on going: Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Animal Clippers

On Sale
Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Cordless Animal Clippers
Features we love:

  • The power: These heavy-duty clippers are ideal for all coat types
  • The freedom: Use these clippers cordless or plugged in
  • The longevity: Up to 2 hours of run time between charges
  • The Combs: ⅛'', ¼'', ⅜'', & ½''
  • The guarantee: Five-year warranty
  • The Yorkie grooming kit: These clippers come with tons of extras, including combs, shears, oil, and a cleaning brush.

Packed with a heavy-duty motor and a modest price point, these clippers are an overall great option for pet owners who are grooming other breeds in addition to a Yorkie. These will cut through all hair types. And although these clippers are not as quiet or cool-running as some of Wahl’s other options, they do a good job of balancing quality and affordability.

These clippers do require an hour-plus of charge time, but they run for two hours after charging. This will leave you with plenty of time to get your Yorkie’s haircut perfect, and the extra run-time is ideal for those with multiple dogs.

The set comes with easy-to-clean stainless-steel precision blades that eliminate snags and painful pulls. This is important if your pet frequently gets tangled hair or if they have been hurt by clippers in the past.

Finally, the set includes a five-year warranty and comes with a complete Yorkie grooming kit, including a case, attachment guide combs, a detangling comb, shears, oil, a charging cord, and a blade cleaning brush.

The one that gets it done fast: Wahl Professional Animal Bravura Pet Clippers

Wahl Professional Animal Bravura Pet Clippers
Features we love:

  • The blade: The 5-in-1 steel blade adjusts between blade sizes #9, 10, 15, 30, & 40, so you’ll have what you need for every possible haircut
  • The run time: 90-minute cordless run time, so you don’t have to recharge after each use
  • The temperature: Cool running, so you don’t need to worry about it overheating from extended use
  • The vibrations: Quiet, low vibration, so it won’t startle anxious pups
  • The combs: Includes six plastic attachment combs: ⅛'', ¼'', ⅓'', ½'', ¾'', & 1''
  • The strokes: 5,500 strokes per minute allow it to quickly glide through matted coats
  • The extras: Accessories include a soft storage bag, oil, combs, cleaning brush, and optional cord

At 8.8 ounces, these premium, lightweight, professional-grade clippers are designed to trim small- to medium-sized animals with thinner coats. In other words, they’re perfect for a Yorkie! The high operating speed and sharp adjustable blades make this clipper a breeze to use.

If you have a nervous pup, these clippers may be a perfect solution. Their quiet motor and low vibrations will allow you to get close to your Yorkie’s face and other sensitive areas without intimidating them.

The fact that it’s cordless is another great feature. Keeping your dog in place is hard enough without having to wrangle a cord. These clippers operate at full power for 90 minutes until the battery is completely depleted. That should be far more than enough for a single grooming session. And once depleted, you can continue using the clippers with the cord attached. The charging time is 60 minutes for a full battery.

These Wahl clippers come with a one-year limited warranty, but they should last long beyond that date.

Note that Wahl also makes a BravMini+ model. It’s meant for trimming paws and faces, but if your Yorkie is on the small side of an already small breed, you may be able to get away with using this compact, cheaper model.

The one that does it for less: Oneisall Quiet Dog Clippers

On Sale
Oneisall Quiet Dog Clippers
Features we love:

  • The price: These clippers will get the job done if you’re on a budget
  • The freedom: Can be used with or without the included charging cord
  • The temperature: The detachable, stainless steel, fixed blade is paired with a ceramic moving blade to stay cool
  • The noise level: Low vibrations and 50-decibel quiet design to avoid startling your pet
  • The combs: 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm & 18mm
  • The guarantee: These clippers come with a lifetime replacement guarantee. That’s pretty good!

The best feature about this pair of clippers is surely their price point; they are significantly more affordable than most other options. While their power and single speed are nothing to write home about, these clippers get the job done.

These are ideal if you want an inexpensive pair of clippers to keep your Yorkie’s hair short About the length of a Yorkie puppy cut. However, if you keep your Yorkie in a long show cut, you’ll need to use scissors to reduce the length before using these clippers.

These lightweight clippers have a detachable blade that adjusts to various lengths. It has an 80-minute charge and run time, and the blades should stay cool during the entire grooming session. The grooming kit includes a detangling comb, shears, blade oil, a cleaning brush, the charging cord and combs.

You may have to stop trimming every so often to clean out the hair out of the blade. It is not difficult, but it is one extra step. Additionally, I found the guard combs to be difficult to remove from the blade.

The enclosed informational guide suggests that this clipper is not ideal for long, thick, or matted fur. Yorkie hair can get long, but their coats are not particularly thick. However, if you also have another dog breed that you need to trim, you may need to choose a power-packed set of clippers made for thick and matted fur.

The one the pros use: Andis UltraEdge Super 2-Speed Pet Clippers

Andis UltraEdge Super 2-Speed Pet Clippers
Features we love:

  • The volume: This set runs quiet
  • The versatility: Two-speed motor for different coat types
  • The cord length: 14' heavy-duty cord for easy movement
  • The durability: Shatter-proof housing
  • The speed: 3400 & 4400 strokes per minute (SPM)

If you want what the pros have, this may be it. In fact, these clippers made our list of the best Andis dog clippers. These clippers are great for all coats and breeds and will plow through matted fur with ease. Clippers of this caliber don’t often come cordless, but the extra-long 14-foot cord makes movement around your dog and equipment easy.

These are premium clippers with a premium price, but with shatter-proof housing and a detachable, interchangeable blade, you may never need to purchase another set of clippers.

This 1.7 lb. pair of clippers has a heavy-duty look and feel, and when you hold it in your hand, you’ll have no doubt about its quality construction. The trimming component rivals this quality with a super sharp #10 steel blade that goes through a special hardening process that keeps it sharper longer.

Because of the high operating speed, the steel blades can get warm with prolonged use. It may be a good idea to switch out to a spare blade during lengthy grooming sessions. Otherwise, the blade may need to take a mid-cut ice bath. If your dog requires grooming combs, shears or other accessories, you’ll need to purchase these separately.

Andis provides a limited one year warranty for this product.

Yorkie clipper buying guide: Important features to consider

You and your Yorkie will be happiest when you can easily trim your pup without hassle or too much time spent. So, before you invest in a set of dog clippers, consider the following clipper features to determine which are most important to you.

Corded vs cordless

Corded clippers can usually beat out cordless varieties with power and reliability. That being said, cordless clippers are ideal for skittish, nervous dogs who will be very uncomfortable with a swinging cord.

Additionally, cordless clippers are much easier to maneuver around a dog. When dealing with Yorkies, cordless clippers that can also be used while plugged in may be best, since the extra power probably isn’t necessary.

Running time & charging time

If having cordless clippers is important to you, you’ll want to keep in mind how long the clippers can operate before they need to be recharged. You’ll want a battery that lasts a long time—especially if you have more than one dog and you want to trim them at the same time. Fortunately, most clippers can continue operating once plugged in.

You should also consider the amount of time it takes to fully charge the battery.

Speed & power

A high powered motor with fast-moving blades can reduce hair pulling and injury.

Higher speeds easily glide through thick or matted hair, so you should pay special attention if you let your Yorkie’s hair grow long. Be on the lookout for clippers that run at 3,000 strokes per minute or higher.

Clippers with multiple speeds, such as the Andis UltraEdge clippers above, give you the best of both worlds: a slow speed for precision in sensitive areas and a fast speed for gliding through coats.

Cost

There are decent clippers out there that won’t break the bank. However, you get what you pay for, so a better quality model with a higher price tag is most likely going to last longer than a cheaper set.

Fortunately, when you consider the typical cost of a trip to the groomers, even premium clippers will pay for themselves after one or two haircuts.

Overheating

You may have a great pair of clippers, but if they overheat before you are done trimming, they aren’t that useful. Look for clippers that can get the job done before they turn on the heat. Personally, I need between 30–45 minutes of running time to get my Yorkie, Max, looking dapper.

There are a few things you can do to prevent overheating clipper blades. Andis sells a product called Blade Care Plus that disinfects blades and helps them stay cool throughout trimming.

Another option is using a model with ceramic blades, such as the Oneisall pair mentioned above. While ceramic blades tend to lose their sharpness faster than steel, they also tend to stay cooler longer, giving you more time to make your fancy cut perfect.

Comfort

Look for clippers that are ergonomic and lightweight. This will be important as trimming can take time, especially for amateurs like me. You don’t want to get a sore wrist when trimming your pup at an awkward angle.
